Silver Bullet – A Stephen King Cult Horror Classic

Silver Bullet (1985), directed by Dan Attias and based on Stephen King’s novella Cycle of the Werewolf, is a uniquely spirited entry in the 1980s horror canon. While many werewolf films of the era leaned into visceral body horror or dark satire, this film operates as a blend of a “whodunit” mystery and a heartwarming coming-of-age story.

It captures the quintessential atmosphere of small Maine town Tarker’s Mills, where a series of gruesome full-moon murders shatters the local peace, forcing an unlikely group of heroes to confront a supernatural predator hiding in plain sight.

The story centers on Marty Coslaw (Corey Haim), a paraplegic boy who navigates the town in a souped-up, gas-powered wheelchair dubbed the “Silver Bullet.”

When the town is plagued by a string of brutal killings, the local sheriff Joe Haller (Terry O’Quinn) struggles to maintain order as a lynch mob led by a grieving father takes matters into their own hands.

Marty, however, survives a close encounter with a beast in the woods and realizes that the killer is a werewolf.

Supported by his older sister, Jane (Megan Follows), Marty enlists the help of his eccentric, beer-swilling Uncle Red (Gary Busey). Red is initially skeptical of Marty’s claims but eventually agrees to help the children investigate the local community.

Their search leads them to a shocking discovery involving a prominent local figure, Reverend Lowe (Everett McGill), whose religious fervor masks a terrifying nightly transformation.

As the next full moon approaches, Marty, Jane, and Red must prepare for a final confrontation in their living room, armed with a single silver bullet and the hope that they can stop the beast before it claims more lives.

James Gammon, Bill Smitrovich, Kent Broadhurst and Lawrence Tierney round out the cast.

Reception for Silver Bullet

Silver Bullet grossed $4 million on its opening weekend, finishing third behind Commando ($6.5 million) and Jagged Edge ($4.2 million).

The film would gross $12.4 million in its theatrical run.

Roger Ebert gave Silver Bullet three out of four stars in his review.

Legacy

Silver Bullet‘s legacy lies in its status as a quintessential 80s creature feature that prioritizes character chemistry over high-concept effects.

It is remembered fondly for the chaotic, improvised energy of Busey, whose performance remains one of the most beloved “cool uncle” archetypes in horror history. The film also served as a major launching pad for Haim, establishing him as a definitive teen star of the decade.

Furthermore, the film’s legacy persists through its screenplay, written by King himself, which retains his signature blend of Americana and macabre folklore.

While the creature design was controversial at the time, the film has aged into a cherished cult classic, celebrated for its nostalgic score and its reminder that courage often comes in the most unexpected packages.
