Shakedown, released in theaters on May 6, 1988, is an action thriller that delivers a gritty and exciting ride through the streets of New York City. Directed by James Glickenhaus, the film stars Peter Weller and Sam Elliott in a compelling buddy-cop dynamic, supported by a strong cast including Patricia Charbonneau, Blanche Baker, and John C. McGinley.
The film follows Roland Dalton (Weller), a determined legal-aid lawyer, who teams up with Richie Marks (Elliott), a rogue NYPD narcotics detective, to uncover a conspiracy of police corruption while defending a young man accused of killing a cop. Weller brings his intensity and intelligence to the role of Dalton, while Elliott exudes his trademark cool and rugged charm as the unorthodox detective. Their chemistry anchors the film and provides many memorable moments.
Charbonneau adds depth to the story as Susan Cantrell, a determined prosecutor and Dalton’s former love interest.
Baker delivers a solid performance as Gail, Dalton’s fiancée, and McGinley, in a supporting role, adds to the film’s gritty atmosphere.
Shakedown is notable for its fast-paced action sequences, including thrilling car chases, shootouts, and hand-to-hand combat.
Glickenhaus’s direction keeps the energy high, and the film’s gritty portrayal of 1980s New York adds to its visceral appeal. While the plot involves familiar themes of corruption and justice, the film’s execution, combined with the strong performances of its leads, elevates it above typical genre fare.
