In Scream 3 (released in theaters on Feb. 4, 2000), the terror shifts from the suburbs to the backlots of Hollywood. The plot centers on the production of “Stab 3,” the latest film-within-a-film based on the infamous Woodsboro murders.
Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has retreated into a life of secluded anonymity, working as a crisis counselor under a pseudonym.
However, she is drawn out of hiding when a new Ghostface killer begins murdering the cast of the movie in the same order their characters die in the script.
Left at each crime scene are photos of Sidney’s deceased mother, Maureen, suggesting that the killer is digging into a dark past that predates the original massacre.
Reuniting to solve the mystery are Dewey Riley (David Arquette), acting as a technical advisor on the set, and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), who is investigating the connection between the murders and Hollywood’s elite.
They are joined by a new ensemble, including the eccentric actress Jennifer Jolie (Parker Posey), the film’s director Roman Bridger (Scott Foley), and Detective Mark Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey).
As the body count rises – claiming victims like actress Sarah Darling (Jenny McCarthy) and “Stab” cast member Tyson (Deon Richmond) – the survivors uncover a conspiracy involving a legendary horror producer, John Milton (Lance Henriksen).
Scream 3, directed by Wes Craven and written by Ehren Kruger, sees the story culminate in a high-stakes confrontation at a movie mogul’s mansion, where the killer’s identity reveals the shocking “secret origin” of the entire franchise.
Roger Corman made a cameo as an on-set studio executive.
Carrie Fisher also made a cameo in the film as former actress Bianca Burnette.
Scream 3 followed Scream (1996), Scream 2 (1997), and preceded Scream 4 (2011), Scream (2022), Scream VI (2023), and Scream 7 (2026), as well as a television series that aired on MTV for three seasons.

Reception for Scream 3
Scream 3 grossed $34.7 million on its opening weekend, finishing No. 1 at the box office.
The film would gross $161.8 million worldwide.
Scream 3 broke The Empire Strikes Back: Special Edition‘s record for the highest weekend debut in February.
Legacy
Scream 3‘s legacy is defined by its commitment to “meta” commentary, specifically targeting the tropes of movie trilogies and the dark underbelly of the entertainment industry.
While it leaned more heavily into comedy than its predecessors, it has gained significant retrospective appreciation for its themes.
The film explored the exploitation of young actresses in Hollywood through the backstory of Maureen Prescott, giving the slasher narrative a layer of social critique that was ahead of its time.
Scream 3 serves as a definitive time capsule of Y2K-era filmmaking, featuring the height of the series’ star power and Craven’s masterful ability to balance suspense with satire.
As the concluding chapter of the original trilogy, it solidified Sidney Prescott as one of cinema’s most resilient “Final Girls” and ensured that the Ghostface mask would remain a permanent icon of horror history.
