Runner Runner plunges viewers into the seductive—and dangerous—realm of online gambling, as bright Princeton student Richie Furst (Justin Timberlake) enters a world where ambition and cleverness are no match for hardened criminals and corrupt power.

Richie Furst, a financially strapped grad student, stakes his tuition on a high-stakes online poker game only to lose all his money to what he deduces is a scam.

Unwilling to walk away, Richie follows a digital trail to Costa Rica, home of suave online gambling mogul Ivan Block (Ben Affleck).

Recognizing Richie’s intellect and tenacity, Ivan offers him a lucrative position within his empire.

The allure of quick riches, glamorous parties, and Ivan’s magnetic influence is hard to resist, with Rebecca (Gemma Arterton), Ivan’s right-hand woman, complicating the mix as both a potential partner and confidant.

However, the glitzy exterior quickly reveals a sinister underbelly.

Ivan’s business ethics are far from clean, and as Richie becomes entangled in high-stakes scams, blackmail, and ever-blurrier moral lines, he draws the attention of Agent Shavers (Anthony Mackie) from the FBI.

The agent isn’t above using intimidation and underhanded tactics to bring down Ivan—and drag Richie with him.

With threats closing in from all sides and the world he has embraced turning treacherous, Richie faces the ultimate gamble: outsmart Ivan Block and the authorities without losing everything he cares about.

Timberlake delivers youthful energy tinged with desperation as Richie, struggling to stay afloat in deep waters.

Affleck cuts an imposing figure as Ivan, portraying charm and menace in equal measure.

Arterton as Rebecca brings mystery and allure, while Mackie’s FBI agent adds constant tension through his ambiguous motivations.

John Heard, Bob Gunton and David Costabile round out the cast.

The film leans on sharp visuals—lush Costa Rican settings and fast-paced casino atmospheres—to immerse viewers in its world of temptation and duplicity.

Directed by Brad Furman and written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien, this sleek thriller uses its tropical Costa Rica setting and a star-studded cast to craft a fast-paced tale of greed, risk, and dangerous alliances.
