Nick of Time (1995), directed by John Badham, is a high-concept political thriller that stands out for its ambitious use of “real-time” storytelling. Long before television series like 24 popularized the format, this film utilized a gimmick where the movie’s 90-minute runtime mirrored the 90 minutes of the protagonist’s harrowing ordeal.

It is a lean, suspenseful exercise in Hitchcockian tension, stripping away the gothic artifice usually associated with its lead actor to present a grounded, desperate man caught in an impossible conspiracy.

The story follows Gene Watson (Johnny Depp), a mild-mannered tax accountant arriving at Union Station in Los Angeles with his young daughter (Courtney Chase).

His mundane life is instantly shattered when he is approached by two people posing as police officers: the menacing Mr. Smith (Christopher Walken) and his partner, Ms. Jones (Roma Maffia).

They kidnap Gene’s daughter and hand him a gun, a badge, and a photo of Governor Eleanor Grant (Marsha Mason), who is scheduled to give a speech at the nearby Westin Bonaventure Hotel.

Mr. Smith gives Gene a chilling ultimatum: he has exactly 90 minutes to assassinate the Governor, or his daughter will be killed.

As the clock ticks down in real-time, Gene desperately tries to find a way out of the trap without alerting the conspirators who are watching his every move.

He attempts to seek help from a hotel shoe-shiner (Charles S. Dutton) and navigates a web of corruption that includes the Governor’s own inner circle, featuring her husband (Peter Strauss).

The narrative is a relentless pressure cooker, moving through the elevators, ballrooms, and secret corridors of the hotel as Gene maneuvers to save both his daughter and the Governor before the final second expires.

Gloria Reuben, G.D. Spradlin, and Bill Smitrovich round out the cast.

Reception for Nick of Time

Nick of Time grossed $2.8 million on its opening weekend, finishing ninth at the box office. The top films of the week were Toy Story ($29.1 million) and GoldenEye ($18.1 million).

The film would gross $8.2 million in its theatrical run.

Roger Ebert gave Nick of Time two and a half stars in his review.

Legacy

The legacy of Nick of Time lies in its status as a masterclass in pacing and structural tension. It is remembered as a rare “everyman” role for Depp, proving his capability as a traditional leading man in a high-stakes action setting.

However, it is the chilling, predatory performance of Walken that remains a favorite among fans of 90s thrillers, as he turned a simple countdown into a terrifying psychological game.

The film’s legacy also persists as a notable technical achievement for director Badham, who utilized handheld cameras and innovative editing to maintain the illusion of continuous time.

While it was a modest success upon release, it has gained a loyal following on home video and streaming for its taut, unpretentious storytelling and it stands as a definitive “ticking clock” thriller, remembered for its ability to make 90 minutes feel like a lifetime of suspense.
