Grudge Match is a surprisingly heartwarming and entertaining film that delivers exactly what you’d expect from a pairing of Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro.
The film follows two legendary boxers, Billy “The Kid” McDonnen (De Niro) and Henry “Razor” Sharp (Stallone), who are coaxed out of retirement for a highly publicized rematch after a decades-long rivalry. While the initial premise might seem predictable, the film subverts expectations with its focus on themes of redemption, second chances, and the importance of family.
Stallone and De Niro bring their A-game, delivering charismatic performances that are both funny and surprisingly touching. Their on-screen chemistry is palpable, and their playful banter keeps the film light and engaging.
The supporting cast, including Kevin Hart as the hilariously ambitious promoter and Kim Basinger as the woman caught in the middle, adds further depth and humor.
Alan Arkin, Jon Bernthal, LL Cool J and Anthony Anderson round out the cast.

Reception for Grudge Match
Grudge Match grossed $7.02 million in its opening weekend, finishing No. 11 at the domestic box office and fourth among the Christmas Day openings behind The Wolf of Wall Street ($18.4 million) starring Leonardo DiCaprio, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty ($12.8 million) starring Ben Stiller and 47 Ronin ($9.9 million) starring Keanu Reeves.
The film would eventually gross $44.9 million in its theatrical run.
Andrew Barker in his Variety review wrote “Essentially recasting Grumpy Old Men with the senescent specters of Rocky Balboa and Jake LaMotta, the result is sporadically amusing, with some chucklesome sight gags and crowdpleasing supporting turns from Alan Arkin and Kevin Hart, yet it’s all so overcooked that it defeats its own purpose.”
Legacy
Grudge Match may not be a cinematic masterpiece, but it’s a fun and feel-good movie that’s perfect for a night of lighthearted entertainment. It’s a reminder that it’s never too late to chase your dreams and that sometimes, the greatest victories are the ones fought off the field.
