Dirty Dancing quickly transcended its modest budget to become a defining cinematic moment for a generation, and its appeal has only grown over time. The film, a quintessential summer romance, introduces us to Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey), a bright, if naive, young woman spending a seemingly dull summer with her family at Kellerman’s resort in the Catskills.

Her world is turned upside down when she stumbles upon a secret world of the resort’s staff, where raw, passionate “dirty dancing” is the nightly entertainment where she meets Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), the resort’s charismatic and rebellious dance instructor.

Despite the disapproval of her father, Dr. Jake Houseman (Jerry Orbach), and the disdain of resort heir Max Kellerman (Jack Weston), Baby finds herself captivated by Johnny.

When Johnny’s partner, Penny Johnson (Cynthia Rhodes from Flashdance), faces an emergency, Baby volunteers to take her place, leading to intensive, intimate dance rehearsals. As they perfect their steps, their social boundaries dissolve, and a powerful, forbidden romance ignites.

Wayne Knight also made an early appearance in the film.

The film culminates in the now-iconic finale, a defiant dance routine that brings Johnny and Baby’s love story to its emotional peak.

Dirty Dancing premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 12, 1987 and was released on August 21 in the United States.
