Cliffhanger, released in theaters on May 28, 1993, is a breathtaking, adrenaline-fueled spectacle that takes the concept of a high-stakes heist to dizzying new heights. The film delivers non-stop suspense and visually stunning action sequences against the majestic backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.

The story introduces Gabe Walker (Sylvester Stallone), a former mountain rescue ranger haunted by a tragic climbing accident. He’s called back into action when a plane carrying a massive sum of stolen Treasury money crashes in the treacherous mountains.

What initially appears to be a rescue mission quickly turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse as Gabe and his fellow ranger, Jessie Deighan (Janine Turner), find themselves caught between a ruthless international thief, Eric Qualen (John Lithgow), and his heavily armed crew, who are desperate to recover their lost loot. As a blizzard rages and the terrain becomes increasingly perilous, Gabe must use all his mountaineering skills and wits to survive and stop Qualen’s murderous pursuit.

Stallone is in prime form as Gabe Walker, perfectly embodying the grizzled, guilt-ridden hero who finds redemption through extreme adversity. He brings both physical prowess and a quiet intensity to the role, making his character’s struggle and determination palpable.

Lithgow delivers a deliciously villainous performance as Qualen, relishing every moment of his character’s cunning sadism, making him a truly memorable antagonist.

Michael Rooker is excellent as Hal Tucker, Gabe’s former climbing partner whose relationship with Gabe adds a poignant emotional layer to the story.

Turner is strong as Jessie, proving to be more than just a damsel in distress, while Rex Linn and Paul Winfield provide solid support, adding to the tension and stakes.

Caroline Goodall, Leon Robinson, Bruce McGill, John Finn and Ralph Waite round out the cast.

Renny Harlin’s (Die Hard 2) direction is masterful, making the most of the incredible practical stunts and the stunning mountain locations. The film is a technical marvel, with sequences that genuinely make you gasp, from the opening tragedy to the numerous perilous climbs and explosions. The action is relentless, expertly choreographed, and always visually clear, allowing the audience to fully appreciate the danger.

Beyond the spectacle, the film maintains a tight narrative pace, building suspense effectively and keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. The themes of survival, redemption, and facing one’s fears are woven throughout the high-octane plot.
