City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly’s Gold, released in theaters on June 10, 1994, reunites the beloved trio of middle-aged friends for another adventure in the Wild West, this time on a treasure hunt. The film, while not quite reaching the heights of its predecessor, offers a spirited and often hilarious journey that continues to explore themes of self-discovery and the enduring bonds of friendship.

The story picks up with Mitch Robbins (Billy Crystal) still grappling with his midlife anxieties. His life takes an unexpected turn when, during a birthday celebration, he discovers a treasure map hidden in the hat of the late, lamented Curly Washburn (Jack Palance, whose character famously died in the first film, but returns here as a surprise twin brother, also named Curly).

Convinced this is his “one thing” and a chance for a new adventure, Mitch convinces his perpetually bewildered friend Phil Berquist (Daniel Stern) and his estranged, freeloading brother Glen (Jon Lovitz) to join him on a perilous quest for gold.

Their journey takes them through treacherous landscapes, into encounters with colorful characters, all while trying to decipher Curly’s cryptic clues and avoid getting into too much trouble.

Crystal once again delivers his signature blend of neurotic humor and heartwarming sincerity as Mitch, leading the charge with his quick wit and relatable anxieties.

Stern is excellent as the long-suffering Phil, providing the perfect comedic foil to Mitch’s grand schemes.

The introduction of Jon Lovitz as Glen, Mitch’s ne’er-do-well brother, adds a fresh and often hilarious dynamic to the trio, with Lovitz’s unique brand of exasperated comedy fitting right in.

Palance, in his dual role as Curly and his twin brother, brings back the iconic gravitas and wisdom that won him an Oscar in the first film, serving as both a guide and a source of comic relief.

Noble Willingham returns as Clay Stone, adding continuity and charm. Josh Mostel as Barry Shalowitz and David Paymer as Ira Stone provide solid supporting performances.

Director Paul Weiland takes the helm, bringing a slightly broader comedic touch to the sequel while still attempting to maintain the spirit of the original. The film excels in its comedic set pieces and the ongoing banter between the lead characters. The Western landscapes are once again beautifully captured, providing an epic backdrop for the treasure hunt.

The screenplay aims for a more overt adventure narrative, embracing the “treasure hunt” trope with enthusiasm. While the emotional depth of the first film isn’t always replicated, the core themes of friendship, finding purpose, and the challenges of family endure, delivered with humor and genuine affection.
