Bad Teacher, released in theaters on June 24, 2011, is a refreshingly audacious and unapologetically raunchy film that delivers big laughs while still managing to find a surprising amount of heart. The movie is a sharp, irreverent take on the teaching profession that consistently hits its comedic marks.

The story centers on Elizabeth Halsey (Cameron Diaz), a lazy, foul-mouthed, and materialistic middle school teacher who hates her job and her students. Her only goal is to marry rich and escape the teaching profession. When her engagement falls through, she sets her sights on a new, wealthy substitute teacher, Scott Delacorte (Justin Timberlake), and becomes obsessed with earning enough money for breast implants to snag him.

This leads her down a path of outrageous schemes, including manipulating students, hustling for money, and engaging in questionable ethical practices, all while subtly pushing the boundaries of what constitutes “teaching.” However, her cynical efforts are often observed by the charmingly laid-back gym teacher, Russell Gettis (Jason Segel), who harbors a crush on Elizabeth and provides a hilariously grounded counterpoint to her chaotic pursuits.

Diaz is absolutely phenomenal as Elizabeth Halsey, fully committing to the character’s outrageous behavior and making her both despicable and strangely endearing. She’s fearless in her portrayal, delivering shocking lines with perfect comedic timing and showcasing a side of herself rarely seen.

Segel is a comedic highlight as Russell, perfectly embodying the chill, genuine gym teacher whose low-key charm slowly wins over Elizabeth. His understated reactions to her madness are pure gold.

Timberlake is perfectly cast as the naive and socially awkward Scott, proving his comedic chops by playing against his pop star image.

Director Jake Kasdan maintains a brisk pace and embraces the film’s R-rated sensibility without apology. The humor is often dark and inappropriate, but it’s executed with such confidence and wit that it consistently lands.

The screenplay, by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, is sharp, offering biting satire on the education system, societal expectations, and the lengths people will go to for superficial gains. Beyond the raunchy humor, the film subtly explores themes of self-acceptance and finding value in unexpected places, particularly through Elizabeth’s grudging growth and her unlikely bond with her students.
