American Ninja 2: The Confrontation brings back the dynamic duo of Michael Dudikoff and Steve James for another round of high-kicking, action-packed martial arts mayhem in this popular follow up to American Ninja. While doubling down on the B-movie charm of its predecessor, the film delivers even more over-the-top action and a slightly more polished feel, solidifying its place as a quintessential 80s action movie.
The story sees Army Rangers Joe Armstrong (Dudikoff) and Curtis Jackson (James) sent on a new assignment to a Caribbean island to investigate the disappearance of several Marines. They quickly discover that the island is controlled by “The Lion” (Gary Conway), a ruthless drug lord and martial arts master who is kidnapping the Marines with the idea of using them as an army of genetically engineered ninja super-soldiers.
Joe and Jackson find themselves up against a seemingly endless supply of highly-trained ninja warriors.
They are aided in their investigation by the tough and resourceful Alicia Sanborn (Michelle Botes).
Joe’s quiet confidence and deadly skills are the perfect foil for Jackson’s charismatic bravado and comedic banter. Their partnership is the heart of the film, and their chemistry is more polished and entertaining than in the first movie.
The film also features supporting roles from Larry Poindexter as Sergeant Charlie McDonald and Jeff Weston as Captain Bill “Wild Bill” Woodward.
The plot is straightforward: our heroes must infiltrate the Lion’s compound, rescue the captured Marines, and defeat the entire ninja army before they can unleash their super-soldiers on the world.
The film is a non-stop barrage of martial arts fights, explosions, and stunts, all culminating in an epic final showdown between Joe and the Lion’s ultimate weapon.
Sam Firstenberg returned to direct the sequel.
A sequel titled American Ninja 3: Blood Hunt, was released in 1989, which was subsequently followed by American Ninja 4: The Annihilation in 1991.
