Air America, released in theaters on August 10, 1990, is a high-octane action-comedy that takes a darkly humorous look at a covert CIA operation during the Vietnam War.
The film centers on Billy Covington (Robert Downey Jr.), a young and daring helicopter pilot who loses his license for reckless flying. Desperate for work, he is recruited by a mysterious organization and sent to Laos, where he joins the ranks of a clandestine airline known as “Air America.” He quickly discovers that the airline’s mission is far from simple; while they transport humanitarian aid, they also engage in a number of questionable activities, including running guns and drugs for the CIA.
In Laos, Billy is partnered with the charismatic and cynical veteran pilot Gene Ryack (Mel Gibson), who is primarily focused on making a profit from the chaos. The two pilots, with their clashing personalities—Billy’s idealism against Gene’s pragmatism—form an unlikely partnership as they navigate the dangers of a war-torn country.
The film also features a strong supporting cast, including Nancy Travis as an outspoken journalist, Lane Smith as a corrupt senator.
David Marshall Grant, Art LaFleur and Marshall Bell round out the cast.
Roger Spottiswoode (Shoot to Kill) directed the film.

Reception for Air America
Air America grossed $8.1 million on its opening weekend, finishing third at the box office.
The film would gross $31.1 million in its theatrical run during the Summer of 1990’s blockbusters lineup.
Legacy
The film’s legacy is tied to its unique blend of political satire and explosive action. While it received mixed reviews upon its release and was not a massive box office success, it has gained a following over the years.
Its lasting impact lies in the electrifying on-screen chemistry Mel Gibson and Downey, Jr., who both delivered charismatic and memorable performances.
Air America is remembered less as a historically accurate war film and more as a prime example of early 90s action-comedy, a film that used a serious backdrop for a story about greed, friendship and war.
