After the Sunset, released in theaters on Nov. 12, 2004, is a slick, sun-drenched crime caper that trades in high-stakes action for breezy, playful suspense. The film is set primarily in the tropical paradise of the Bahamas and focuses on the age-old question: Can a master criminal truly retire?

The plot centers on Max Burdett (Pierce Brosnan), a world-renowned diamond thief, and his partner-in-crime and lover, Lola Cirillo (Salma Hayek).

Having successfully pulled off their final, spectacular heist—stealing the second of the three famous Napoleon diamonds—the pair retreats to a luxury villa at Paradise Island in the Bahamas to enjoy their ill-gotten gains.

Max is determined to settle into a life of sun, fishing, and relaxation.

However, their peace is immediately interrupted by the arrival of FBI Agent Stan Lloyd (Woody Harrelson).

Stan has been pursuing Max for years, a personal rivalry that has become Stan’s defining obsession.

Convinced that Max is planning to steal the third and final Napoleon diamond, which is due to arrive on the island via a luxury cruise ship, Stan plants himself in the resort.

Though they claim to be retired, the cat-and-mouse game resumes immediately, fueled by Stan’s paranoia and Max’s undeniable temptation to engage in one last professional dance.

The escalating tension is complicated by the presence of a local enforcement officer, Sophie (Naomie Harris), and the involvement of the criminal underworld, represented by figures like the local kingpin, Henry Mooré (Don Cheadle).

Strong supporting performances from Mykelti Williamson and Rex Linn add to the film’s blend of law enforcement and shady operatives.

Russell Hornsby, Michael Bowen, Troy Garity, Alan Dale, Chris Penn, John Michael Higgins, Jeff Garlin and Kate Walsh round out the cast.

Brett Ratner (Money Talks, Rush Hour, Rush Hour 2, Rush Hour 3, Tower Heist) directed the film.
