The Ides of March (released in theaters on October 7, 2011) exposes the ruthless, cutthroat machinery of modern presidential campaigns in a taut, razor-sharp political thriller. Directed by George Clooney and adapted from Beau Willimon’s stage play Farragut North, the story follows Stephen Meyers (Ryan Gosling), an idealistically driven junior campaign manager working for Pennsylvania Governor Mike Morris (Clooney) during a high-stakes Democratic primary in Ohio.

Guided by seasoned campaign manager Paul Zara (Philip Seymour Hoffman), Stephen genuinely believes Morris is a transformative leader capable of restoring integrity to American politics.

However, as the primary battle against a rival candidate intensifies, Stephen receives a secretive, back-room meeting request from Tom Duffy (Paul Giamatti), the rival’s cunning strategist, who attempts to recruit him by predicting Morris’s inevitable defeat.

Stephen’s decision to keep this secret meeting hidden from Paul initiates a devastating chain reaction that rapidly dismantles his political career.

Matters worsen when Stephen strikes up a romantic fling with Molly Stearns (Evan Rachel Wood), an ambitious campaign intern whose father heads the Democratic National Committee.

Stephen uncovers a shocking secret connecting Molly to Governor Morris – an illicit scandal that threatens to ruin Morris’s presidential ambitions if exposed to relentless reporter Ida Horowicz (Marisa Tomei).

As powerful kingmakers like Senator Thompson (Jeffrey Wright) leverage their endorsements for maximum political gain, Stephen is brutally betrayed, fired by Paul for disloyalty, and left isolated in a cold political system.

Pushed to the brink after a devastating tragedy, Stephen abandons his youthful idealism, weaponizing the scandalous truth to black-mail his way back to the top and securing his ultimate, ruthless ascent in the political hierarchy.
