Making the Grade (released in theaters on May 18, 1984) leaps onto the screen as a fast-paced, irreverent 1980s teen comedy that satirizes prep-school elitism with boundless energy and sharp prep-culture humor. The story centers on Eddie Keaton (Judd Nelson), a clever, street-smart hustler from New Jersey who finds himself in deep trouble after accumulating massive gambling debts to a ruthless loan shark named Dice (Andrew Dice Clay).
Desperate to dodge Dice’s aggressive collectors, Eddie crosses paths with Palmer Woodrow (Dana Olsen), a spoiled, lazy rich kid whose wealthy parents threaten to cut off his inheritance unless he graduates from the elite Hoover Academy.
Refusing to attend himself, Palmer offers Eddie $10,000 plus expenses and a Porsche to pose as him, move into the dorms, and pass all of his prep school classes.
Eddie relocates to the snobbish world of Hoover Academy, adopting Palmer’s identity while attempting to navigate snobbish traditions and high society expectations alongside Palmer’s friend Rand (Carey Scott).
Unexpectedly, Eddie thrives in his new environment, outsmarting pretentious rivals like arrogant classmates Bif (Scott McGinnis) and Skip (John Dye).
Complications arise when Eddie falls genuinely in love with a charming, grounded prep-school coed named Tracy (Jonna Lee), forcing him to balance his growing feelings with his fraudulent cover story.
Meanwhile, Hoover Academy’s stern dean, Mr. Harriman (Gordon Jump), keeps a watchful eye on Eddie’s suspicious behavior.
As midterms approach, Eddie’s double life begins to unravel when his true identity is endangered by Bif’s scheming and Dice unexpectedly shows up on campus demanding his money.
Eddie must rely on his streetwise wits and academic knowledge to pull off the ultimate trick, outsmart the dean, pay off his debts, and win Tracy’s heart before graduation.
